The Hang Seng Index performed well on the first trading day of the second half of the year. It opened 190 points higher at 23,071, rising as much as 454 points to 23,335 before retreating to close up 174 points or 0.76% at 23,055. The technology index fell 17 points or 0.4% to 4,454. Total market turnover was HK$369.6 billion.


Hong Kong stocks fell for several consecutive months in June, accumulating a drop of 2,301 points. Yesterday's rebound was normal. If funds flow back into Hong Kong stocks, the market outlook for July may not be too pessimistic: after breaking below the 0.382 Fibonacci retracement level of 22,986, the Hang Seng Index bottomed out at 22,518 and rebounded. If it can hold above 23,000 today and next Monday, it will test the 20-day moving average (24,062) resistance level.


European stocks followed suit across the board, with German stocks surging 2.16% at the close, while British and French stocks rose 1.67% and 1.65% respectively.


US hiring activity slowed significantly in June, with non-farm payrolls increasing by only 57,000, falling short of previous estimates. This cooled expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike, and US stocks generally performed well on Thursday ahead of Friday's Independence Day holiday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit new intraday and closing record highs. After opening 89 points higher, the Dow extended its gains to as much as 598 points, reaching a high of 52,903. The S&P 500 rose as much as 0.77%, before falling as much as 0.74%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq rose 0.85% before retreating, falling as much as 1.57%.


At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 594 points, or 1.14%, at 52,900; the S&P 500 was roughly flat at 7,483; and the Nasdaq Composite fell 207 points, or 0.8%, to 25,832. The US dollar index fell as much as 0.82% to 100.558, while the euro rose 0.84% ​​to $1.1475, and the yen rebounded 1.21% to 160.63 per dollar. Risk assets were favored again, with Bitcoin surging as much as 4.34% to $62,117. The weakening dollar boosted spot gold prices, which rebounded nearly 2.9% to a high of $4,143.97 per ounce.
