Amidst volatile tensions in the Middle East, the Hang Seng Index opened 266 points lower at 26,359, then fell as much as 351 points to 26,274, closing down 232 points or 0.87% at 26,393. The Technology Index dropped 18 points or 0.35% to 5,102. Total market turnover was HK$279.7 billion.


For the week, the Hang Seng Index rose a cumulative 617 points or 2.39%.


The market pattern this month has been one of initial decline followed by a rise. The Hang Seng Index has risen from a 5-May low of 25,690 to a 7-May high of 26,669, meaning the monthly range has widened slightly to 979 points. As long as the Hang Seng Index can hold above its 250-day moving average (25,518), it can continue to rise. If it breaks through 26,669 points, the first target is the February 10 high of 27,397 points, and the market may then test the resistance zone of 27,500 to 28,000 points.


European stock markets closed slightly lower, with the UK, French, and German markets closing down 0.43%, 1.09%, and 1.32% respectively.


The latest US employment data was positive, and the market still hopes for a final ceasefire between the US and Iran. US stocks rebounded on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened slightly lower by 15 points, then rebounded as much as 233 points to 49,830 points, before settling down. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite both hit record intraday and closing highs. The S&P 500 rose as much as 0.88% to 7,401 points, and the Nasdaq Composite rose as much as 1.71% to 26,248 points.


U.S. stocks closed higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 12 points, or 0.02%, to 49,609; the S&P 500 gained 61 points, or 0.84%, to 7,398; and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 440 points, or 1.71%, to 26,247. For the week, the Dow rose 0.2%, the S&P 500 rebounded 2.3%, and the Nasdaq gained 4.5%. Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq have risen for six consecutive weeks.


The U.S. dollar index fell as much as 0.24% to 97.83, the euro rose 0.55% to $1.1724, and the yen also rose 0.32% to 156.44 per dollar. Bitcoin fluctuated, falling as much as 1.54% to $79,205 before recovering.
