Market concerns about the potential spread of conflict in the Middle East caused the Hang Seng Index to open 488 points lower at 24,789, and then continue to fall, plunging as much as 1,073 points in the afternoon to a low of 24,203, a more than eight-month low. The decline narrowed slightly towards the close, ending the day down 894 points or 3.54% at 24,382, marking its third consecutive day of losses. The technology index fell 159 points or 3.28% to 4,712. Total market turnover was HK$368.6 billion.
Yesterday, the Hang Seng Index broke through the recent low of 24,906 and the 250-day moving average (25,108), a key bull-bear dividing line. It is expected to quickly recover the 250-day moving average today. If it can regain and hold above the 10-day moving average (25,593), the outlook for the market can be positive. The "axis of evil" appears strong on the surface but is weak underneath; the economic prospects of the civilized world are bright. The Hong Kong stock market should pay attention to oil prices, the US dollar index, and the performance of A-shares.
European stocks mostly rose, with the UK ETF retreating 0.24%, while French and German ETFs rose 0.79% and 1.22% respectively.
Progress in US-Iran talks led Trump to postpone attacks on Iranian power plants by five days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened sharply higher by 226 points, and its gains extended to as much as 1,135 points, reaching a high of 46,712; the S&P 500 surged by as much as 2.23%, and the Nasdaq Composite jumped as much as 2.5%.
At the close of US trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 631 points, or 1.38%, to 46,208; the S&P 500 rose 74 points, or 1.15%, to 6,581; and the Nasdaq Composite gained 299 points, or 1.38%, to 21,946.
The US dollar index fell as much as 0.77% to 98.88, while the euro rose 0.6% to $1.1642, and the yen rose 0.76% to 158.02 per dollar. Bitcoin rebounded as much as 6.5% to $71,782. Gold prices plunged as much as 8.75%, hitting a low of $4,099.17 per ounce, before closing at $4,406.87, still down 1.88%.
