The Hang Seng Index opened 254 points higher at 27,019, then rose as much as 258 points to 27,024 before encountering resistance and falling back, ultimately closing down 384 points or 1.43% at 26,381. The Technology Index fell 151 points or 2.87% to 5,109. Main board turnover was HK$259.2 billion.
Hong Kong stocks initially rose but then fell on the futures settlement day, with the Hang Seng Index barely holding above its 100-day moving average (26,328). The index is expected to trade within the Bollinger Bands range of 26,000 to 27,600. A break below 26,000 could lead to a significant decline. The performance of Hong Kong stocks was relatively mixed, with leading technology stocks lacking upward momentum. This is because the market is awaiting the release of these companies' last year's results next month, while remaining concerned that internal competition will drag down their earnings. Furthermore, the development of artificial intelligence (AI) by these leading companies has not yet been sufficient to justify high valuations from investors.
European stocks rallied, with British, French, and German stocks rising 0.37%, 0.72%, and 0.45%, respectively.
Fears of an artificial intelligence (AI) bubble persisted, dragging down overall tech stocks. Funds rotated to other sectors, resulting in mixed performance for US stocks on Thursday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened 62 points higher and extended its gains to as much as 333 points before falling as much as 244 points to recover by the close. The S&P 500 fell as much as 1.24% during the session, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped as much as 2.08%.
At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose slightly by 17 points, or 0.03%, to 49,499; the S&P 500 fell 37 points, or 0.54%, to 6,908; and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 273 points, or 1.18%, to 22,878.
The US dollar index rose as much as 0.29% to 97.98, while the euro fell 0.32% to $1.1774. The yen rose 0.42% to 155.71 against the dollar. Bitcoin retreated 4.9% to $66,523. Spot gold rose as much as 0.79% to $5,205.48 per ounce.
