The Hang Seng Index opened 97 points higher at 26,863, then extended its gains, rising as much as 423 points to 27,188, before closing up 361 points or 1.35% at 27,126. The Technology Index rose 28 points or 0.5% to 5,754. Turnover on the main board reached HK$254.3 billion.
The Hang Seng Index has accumulated a gain of 639 points over five days, returning to above 27,000, and is expected to challenge the high of 27,381 points reached on October 2nd last year. If the Hang Seng Index can break through this technical resistance, it would indicate that the stock market will further seek new highs for the year, and also suggest the possible start of a new upward wave, with an initial target of 29,617 points. However, given the current breakout from technical resistance, the market outlook is expected to be weaker, and risks are increased.
European stock markets generally rose, with British and French stocks rising 0.58% and 0.27% respectively, while German stocks fell slightly by 0.15%.
The US Federal Reserve began its two-day policy meeting. US stocks traded mixed on Tuesday, with healthcare stocks leading the decline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened sharply lower by 308 points and then extended its losses to a maximum of 549 points, reaching a low of 48,862 points. The S&P 500, however, hit a record high of 6,988 points during the session, rising as much as 0.56%, before closing at a 12% all-time high.
At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 408 points, or 0.83%, to 49,003; the S&P 500 rose 28 points, or 0.41%, to 6,978; and the Nasdaq Composite rose 215 points, or 0.91%, to 23,817.
The US dollar index plunged as much as 1.54% to 95.55, the euro rose 1.69% to $1.2084, and the yen continued its upward trend, rising 1.36% to 152.11 against the dollar. Bitcoin fluctuated before rising 2.42% to $89,417.
Amidst heightened tensions in Iran, the U.S. military announced air force exercises in the Middle East, fueling risk aversion and pushing spot gold prices to new highs, rising as much as 3.57% to a peak of $5,187.2 per ounce.
