Hong Kong stocks closed strong on the final trading day of the third quarter. The Hang Seng Index opened 51 points higher at 26,674, then dipped 64 points to a low of 26,558 before regaining momentum in the afternoon, finishing the day up 232 points, or 0.87%, at 26,855. The Tech Index rose 141 points, or 2.24%, to 6,465. Main Board turnover reached HK$314.9 billion.

The Hang Seng Index surged 1,777 points, or 7.09%, in September, its largest monthly gain since February this year and extending its five-month winning streak to its longest since February 2021. The Hang Seng Index rose 2,783 points, or 11.56%, in the third quarter, marking its third consecutive quarter of gains.

Due to the long mainland holiday, northbound capital inflows were halted, resulting in a relatively quiet market. The Hang Seng Index is expected to consolidate between 26,000 and 27,000 points. A break above 27,000 in the short term is unlikely. Investors with existing stocks should continue to hold, while those without should avoid rushing into the market.

European stock markets performed well, with UK, French, and German stocks rising 1.03%, 0.9%, and 0.98%, respectively.

Despite the US government shutdown, US stocks rebounded on Wednesday (October 1st). The Dow and S&P 500 both hit record closing highs, with the S&P 500 breaking above 67,000 for the first time and also breaking through that high during the session. The Dow opened 31 points lower, then fell as much as 121 points, hitting a low of 46,276. The S&P 500 retreated 0.48% before surging 0.45% to a high of 6,718. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell as much as 0.63%.

At the close of U.S. stock markets, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 43 points, or 0.09%, to 46,441; the S&P 500 rose 22 points, or 0.34%, to 6,711; and the Nasdaq Composite rose 95 points, or 0.42%, to 22,755.

The U.S. dollar index fell 0.33% to 97.46; the Japanese yen rose 0.89% to 146.59 per dollar. Eurozone inflation accelerated to 2.2% in September, in line with expectations, sending the euro up 0.39% to $1.1791. Bitcoin rose as much as 3.7% to $118,009.
