The Hang Seng Index opened 154 points lower at 24,968, then fell 234 points to 24,887. It reversed course in the afternoon, rising 88 points to a high of 25,210. The index rose 43 points, or 0.17%, to 25,165, ending a four-day losing streak. The Tech Index fell less than 1 point, or 0.01%, to 5,541. Main Board turnover reached HK$285.2 billion.


Yesterday, the Hang Seng Index just reclaimed its 20-day moving average (25,165). It is expected to fluctuate primarily around the 20-DMA  in the short term. If it falls below 25,000, it could test support at the 50-DMA  (24,585). Upward momentum is weak at this level.


With the upcoming Jackson Hole annual meeting in the United States, investors are focused on the Federal Reserve's outlook on interest rates. The market generally anticipates a September rate cut, with two to three rate cuts expected this year. Furthermore, mainland Chinese stocks have recently performed strongly, and if the upward trend is sustainable, it is expected to support Hong Kong stocks.


European stock markets showed mixed results, with UK stocks rising 1.08% to a new high, while French and German stocks fell 0.08% and 0.6%, respectively.


Poor performance for US retail and consumer stocks, coupled with investor concerns about overvalued technology companies, put pressure on US stocks on Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened less than 1 point higher and briefly climbed 111 points, but subsequently fell 154 points to a low of 44,767. The S&P 500 fell 1.05% at one point, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped as much as 1.92% before significantly narrowing its losses.


At the close of US trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 16 points to 44,938, while the S&P 500 fell 15 points, or 0.24%, to 6,395, marking its fourth consecutive day of decline. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 142 points, or 0.67%, to 21,172.


The US dollar index fluctuated, falling 0.19% to 98.08 before stabilizing. The euro rose 0.23% to $1.1674, and the yen rose 0.53% to 146.88 per dollar. Bitcoin fell 1.59% to $112,519.

The Hang Seng Index opened 181 points lower at 25,733, and once plunged 275 points to a low of 25,639, before recovering its losses, rising as much as 89 points to 26,004. It closed the day up 62 points, or 0.24%, at 25,978; the Tech Index rose 36 points, or 0.75%, to 4,902. Total market turnover was HK$236.7 billion. For the week, the Hang Seng Index fell 182 points, or 0.69%. Hong Kong stocks rebounded on Friday but failed to recover the 26,000-point mark. The Hang Seng Index broke through the descending channel earlier this month with an upward gap (25,254 to 25,668). Last week's short-term correction to this gap followed by a sharp rebound reflects the strong support at this level. Recent geopolitical tensions have fluctuated, causing Hong Kong stocks to trade in a volatile range.
